WHAT IS MASTERY BASED LEARNING?
In the past few years, Chase STEMM Academy has undergone a culture change through academics. Studying Visible Learning by John Hattie led the lead-learner in our building, Principal Jack Hunter, to inquire further about some of the strategies with high effect size, with the hopes of applying research-based strategies to mathematics instruction in our building. Particularly intriguing is the effect size of "self-reported grading" at 1.44, meaning that learners who can self-identify the progress they are making towards learning goals are progressing three times faster than the expected growth for one year, effect size 0.40 (Hattie, 2012). In order for learners to self-report grades, they must become "assessment capable" learners (Frey, Fisher & Hattie, 2018). Frey, Fisher, and Hattie describe assessment capable learners in the following qualities:
"They are aware of their current level of understanding in a learning area.
They understand their learning path and are confident enough to take the challenge.
They can select tools and resources to guide their learning.
They seek feedback and recognize that errors are opportunities to learn.
They monitor their own progress and adjust the course as needed.
They recognize what they're learning and can teach others” (2018).
Creating an environment for assessment capable learners who would be able to self-reflect on their learning and self-evaluate their progress to flourish became a goal at Chase and led to mastery-based learning in mathematics.
SO HOW DO WE HELP YOU?
Mastery Based Learning Works!
We are available and conduct bi-weekly book studies on our model.
We provide independent leadership coaching on culture change.
Actual educators who are currently using the model in the classroom train your staff and are available for real world questions.
This requires no curriculum purchase at all. Once the educator is trained the model just works.
VIRTUAL BOOK STUDY WITH EDUCATORS
One of our educators will work with a staff member or members and assist the implementing school in the implementation process. Requires set of books
Hunter delivers professional speeches that resonate with the listener. The thought provoking topics that he discusses will invoke conversations that will move your organization in the right direction. His Keynote's provide a unique approach coupling his background, as a Chief Operating Officer, and now as a leader of an urban school. The mixture of the two creates life lessons that will inspire all listeners.
HANDS ON TRAINING
We are a grass roots group of educators who pride our selves on a cost effective approach to school and student turnaround. Four sessions and a follow up consultation is the normal metric to evoke change in the schools we work with.
